Beating Obesity with BJJ

This is a cool, quick story from the website BJJ Eastern Europe, although it’s about an American. BJJee.com often has interesting stories, news, rumors, competition footage, new technique, and so one. Definitely worth checking in on regularly.

This article focuses on Andrew Wooten, a Gracie Barra black belt from Augusta, Georgia. He has lost over 30 kilograms, which is 66 pounds. He did it by being disciplined with his diet, training jiu jitsu 5 times a week, and by throwing in some Crossfit.

I like his story because it illustrates something I try to get across to people: there are no magic pills or shortcuts or superfruit drinks or anything else that will do the work for you. If you’re interested in weight loss, BJJ is an awesome tool. But being disciplined with your diet is at least as important – maybe even more important than training.

Andrew eats a healthy diet:

“I eat brown rice, vegetables, chicken, egg whites, oatmeal and fruit.No alcohol or soft drinks, drank only water. I was very determined and strict with the diet. Not even a day out of it.”

And he’s very disciplined about training as well, reporting that he hasn’t missed more than a week since he started training. Exercise was the escape from what he felt was a pretty crazy time in his life.

Keep that in mind the next time someone tries to tell you about their secret shake recipe or meal plan or whatever. Basic sensible healthy diet, training hard, and most importantly being consistent with everything is what actually works for most people.
